“I want women to know about Gateway to Hope, and to know that people care and want to help.”
After retiring from a long career in education, Becky was looking forward to a future filled with adventure. After years of planning and saving, she was finally ready to embark on long-awaited trips to the Middle East, South America, and Asia. She also eagerly anticipated the opportunity to spend more time with her two adult children and grandchildren.
Having watched her mother navigate a breast cancer diagnosis in 2020, Becky understood the importance of regular screenings. Still, she was surprised when a routine screening revealed a small spot that turned out to be breast cancer.
Although she was surrounded by support from family, friends, and her church community, the diagnosis and treatment process felt overwhelming. During her first oncology appointment, a nurse navigator introduced her to Gateway to Hope.
Becky connected with Gateway to Hope Patient Navigator Sarah, whose support made an immediate difference. Their first conversation lasted nearly an hour, covering not only treatment, but also Becky’s emotional well-being, support system, retirement plans, and the life cancer had unexpectedly interrupted.
“Every time she called, I felt her genuine care and concern for my well-being,” Becky said.
In addition to providing emotional support, Gateway to Hope helped ease the financial strain of treatment-related expenses.
“Any financial assistance is a big help,” she said. “Even when a person has insurance, health issues cause a financial burden.”
Today, Becky recognizes how fortunate she was. She also knows that many women face cancer without the same resources.
That’s why she wants others to know about Gateway to Hope.
“While I had a wonderful support system, I realize not everyone has that,” she said. “I want women to know about Gateway to Hope, and to know that people care and want to help.”
